DrawingsHere you can see some products from Drawing I and Drawing II, which I took during my first two semesters at SCSU, and some drawing assignments from my Painting class.

Shoes
[October 2001 / Vine charcoal on paper, 24"x 18"]
The shoe on the bottom right looked strange when I had just the outline of the shape. The details and context of that shoe make it look natural.
Broken Chair
[October 2001 / Pencil on paper, 24"x 18"]
A study in drawing negative space. My family had acquired a chair that was quite unglued, and I drew it. The chair is now happily together again.
Paper Canyon
[November 2001 / Vine charcoal on paper, 18"x 24"]
In-class assignment involving light, contrast, and paper bags. The little man was not actually there.
Dodecahedron
[November 2001 / Vine charcoal on paper, 24" x 18"]
Similar to Paper Canyon, this involved a cardboard 20-sided geometric shape (a dodecahedron). Heavy use of smudging achieved an almost watercolor-like effect on the shape.
Ironing
[November 2001 / Vine charcoal on paper, 24" x 18"]
Three old irons and a shirt between them. I was thinking of using this for the final series, but I chose instead three ink drawings.
Still Life with Rose
[December 2001 / Ink on paper, 18" x 24"]
The arrangement of the red rose against the green drapery was a bad decision on my part, but I had fun drawing this.
Hearth
[December 2001 / Ink on paper, 18" x 24"]
One of three final pictures for Drawing I, this was a picture of the fireplace tools on the hearth at home. It was interesting painting metal with ink, and I enjoyed adding the shadows.
Earl Hallway
[December 2001 / Ink on paper, 24" x 18"]
This is my favorite of the three final pictures. I like the depth and the perspective of the composition. You are looking down the main hallway of the fine arts building at Southern toward the front doors, and on the left is room 104, the Drawing room.
Drawing Room
[December 2001 / Ink on paper, 18" x 24"]
I chose this composition because of the depth portrayed and the contrast acheivable. This was one of three final works for Drawing I.
Dark Television
[March 2002 / Compressed Charcoal on paper, 24" x 18"]
Draw two common objects from two different points of view. I drew the TV up on a shelf also, but my classmates liked this better. They said there was something ominous or mysterious about it being below eye level.
Maggie
[March 2002 / Pencil on paper, 18"x 24"]
A portrait of my classmate Maggie. Originally, this was a great portrait (as it was only my third) but the charcoal got smudged in transport. By this time I found I quite enjoyed portraiture.
Self Portrait After Dürer
[Spring 2002 / Pencil on paper, 7.5"x 9"]
I was assigned the style of Albrecht Dürer in which to draw myself.
Pixel Portrait
[Spring 2002 / Pencil on paper, 13.5" x 20"]
A fun, pixelated self portrait from a photograph—the same one I drew the Dürer-style portrait from.

This is a 26 x 40 pixel computerized version of the picture! Click here to see it enlarged.
Chess I
[May 2002 / Compressed Charcoal on paper, 18" x 24"]
My progression series final for Drawing II. The wooden chess pieces were hand-made by my dad.

Chess II
[May 2002 / Compressed Charcoal on paper, 18" x 24"]

Chess III
[May 2002 / Compressed Charcoal on paper, 18" x 24"]

Matt
[Fall 2002 / vine charcoal on paper, 9"x12"]
Portrait of a classmate. This was one assignment that lead up to portraiture in oil paints.
Self Portrait in pencil
[Fall 2002 / Pencl on paper, 9"x12"]
This and the following assignment prepared me to paint a self portrait from life.
