The following four pictures I made based on photographs, in Microsoft's Windows Paint, inputting the images almost pixel by pixel. Doing these projects taught me a lot about color. I "painted" these before I even knew about anti-aliasing, so they are rather jaggy.
Independence Hall
[Jan.-May 1999]
Statue of Liberty
[March 1999]
Washington Monument
[April 1999]
White House
[1999]
This image was getting very complicated because of the trees and railings in front of the building, so it never got finished.
City Graphic
[2000]
I took private art lessons from October 1999 to March 2001, which provided a great foundation to build on when I started college. Here are many of the drawings I produced during that time.
Ladies' Shoes
[December 1999 / 17" x 14"]
This kind of shoes is not easy to draw, but I was very pleased with the result. This and the following black and white pictures are pencil on paper.
Seltzer Bottle
[April. 2000 / 14" x 17"]
A study in glass—a material very satisfying to draw!
Birdhouse
[June 2000 / 14" x 17"]
A study in wood. It was sometimes tedious, but in the end, rewarding.
Drapery
[July 2000 / 17" x 14"]
A study in cloth.
Apple
[July 2000 / 7" x 7"]
My first colored pencil drawing. It only took a little over two hours, compared to maybe eight or ten for the other drawings. Prismacolor® pencils on Canson® paper, and so on for the other colored pencil pictures.
Metronome
[August 2000 / 10.5" x 14.25"]
I was surprised the brass crank ended up looking shiny! The woodgrain and nicks in the wood were fun to add.
Dolphins
[September 2000 / 12.5" x 18.5"]
I drew the dolphins from some line drawings in a book. For the lighting and background I referred to some more books. the fish and rocks were invented.
New Hampshire Flowers
[January 2001 / 14" x 11"]
This is a picture drawn from a photo my brother took of some flowers while we were vacationing in New Hampshire in September 2000.
Delicate Arch
[February 2001 / 15.5" x 10"]
The most famous arch in Arches National Park in Utah.
Coffee Pot
[December 2000 / 14" x 17"]
A study in chrome. I had the most fun working on this one! Actually, there is a self portrait upside down in the base of the pot, but it's tiny. You can, however, see my drawing hand and plaid shirt just above the point of white in the middle of the coffeepot.
Here are some other things I have created, including portraits. I do wish to add to this section now that I have experience in more media. And I have plans to paint in the next couple of months if I have some spare time.
Hawker Hurricane WWII Fighter
[July 1999 / 9.5" x 7.5"]
I copied this from a book about airplanes. It was the first drawing in which I drew (as well as I could) exactly what I saw.
Harold A. Downey Aug. 1930Feb. 1997
[July 2000 / 3.25" x 4.125"]
I gave this drawing of my grandpa as a gift to my grandma.
Arielle
[September 2001 / 3" x 3"]
A portrait of a young lady in my church at age 13.
Dave & Marianne [December 2001 / 7" x 5"]
This drawing was done on commission from a friend as a Christmas gift to his parents.
Sarah
[September 2002 / 4" x 6"]
A portrait of Arielle's older sister at age 16.
Mollie Downey [May 2004 / 8" x 10"]
This was what my mom looked like at four or five years old. After selecting a beautiful 1950's style frame, I gave this to her on Mothers Day 2004.
Here are web sites I have designed other than this one. One of them was a school project, but it intersects with my Virtual Lego hobby. I am indebted to Tim Courtney for giving me a jump start on web design.
LDraw.org: Centralized LDraw Resources
[July 2003]
Tim Courtney, now chairman of the LDraw Steering Committee, contacted me in July to design the graphics for LDraw.org to mesh with an existing framework. I learned extremely much about CSS and optimizing images for the web. It was because of the things I learned in that experience that I was able to make this site what it is.
Non-profit Organization Website: Virtual Construction
[December 2003]
My final project for Information Graphics was to create a web site for a ficticious non-profit organization. I chose Virtual Construction, my own concept of an LDraw.org-like organization for other construction toys on the computer.
Peace and Purpose
[March 2004]
My church began a site with great information on the good news of salvation from sin, death, and hell.
Integrity Piano Service
[April 2004]
My brother Ken finally decided to get his own web site for his piano service business, so he had me design it.
New Creation Graphic Arts
[May 2004]
I too decided now was as good a time as any, and I launched my business web site.
